A glimpse of Ann and Gerry's final and most beautiful dome.

By the time they finished the smaller dome, Gerry and Ann realized that they did not have enough energy to continue their commitment to doing all the work by hand. The first task that went to a fossil fuel solution was carving the emplacement out of the hillside. Hours of exhausting labor with a pick axe on the concrete-like caliche conglomerate common in this area produces only a few cubic feet of progress. The use of a front-loader allowed them to get started laying out the floor plan and pouring the floor and footings much more quickly.

It's hard to remember that this light airy room is actually buried in the hillside, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter.

Later they located local stucco and plaster company that wasn’t afraid to tackle the unusual task of covering the mesh form inside and out. Besides family members, many friends contributed to the building of this dome over the ten years from November 1984 to June, 1994, especially friends Annike, David Parker, John McAfee. The total out of pocket cost for the 1500 square foot dome with one and a half baths, two bedrooms, carport, and all off-grid utilities was $76.250.
